October marks National Arts & Humanities Month — a time to celebrate, support, and spotlight the invaluable role that the arts and humanities play in our communities. From bustling urban centers to rural regions, the creative expressions of artists, performers, and cultural organizations provide more than just entertainment—they foster a sense of identity, strengthen local economies, and drive tourism engagement across the country.
The US Cultural & Heritage Marketing Council (USCHMC) strongly believes the arts and humanities are at the heart of vibrant communities. These sectors bring rich, authentic stories to life, encouraging residents and visitors alike to connect on a deeper level with the history, traditions, and innovation of a place. Whether it's through a local theater performance, a museum exhibition, a heritage festival, or a public art installation, the arts offer a unique opportunity and lens through which to experience and celebrate the diversity of our nation.
The Impact for the Creative Economy
Arts and culture are more than just enrichment—they are key contributors to the creative economy. According to the National Endowment for the Arts, the creative industries contribute over $1.1trillion to the US economy. This sector also employs millions of Americans across a broad range of sectors, from artists and musicians to designers, historians, curators and archivists.
And it’s not just major cities that benefit from the creative economy. Smaller communities often see an economic boost through local arts festivals, galleries, cultural centers, and historical sites, which draw in visitors and provide opportunities for small businesses to thrive. The collective creative endeavors create jobs, drive local spending, and stimulate growth in industries such as hospitality, dining, and retail.
A Pillar for Cultural Tourism
Arts and cultural organizations are a powerful force in attracting visitors and tourists, both domestically and internationally. Cultural tourism, which focuses on experiences centered around heritage, the arts, and history, is one of the fastest-growing segments of the global travel industry. Whether travelers are seeking to attend a performance at a historic theater, explore indigenous cultural sites, or participate in an arts workshop, these experiences offer authentic connections to the destinations they visit.
Travelers who engage in cultural tourism seek meaningful, curated experiences that not only entertain but also educate and inspire, creating lasting memories. By promoting and investing in the arts and humanities, destinations across the US can differentiate themselves in a crowded tourism market, offering visitors an experience that’s rich in culture and creativity.
Supporting the Arts - Supports Stronger Communities
National Arts & Humanities Month is a reminder that our creative industries are not just a luxury—they are essential. They inspire our communities, provide a sense of place, and foster education and understanding across cultural divides. When we support the arts, we support the very fabric of our culture.
At USCHMC, we remain committed to supporting the critical contributions of our diverse arts and cultural organizations and our clients. By recognizing and investing in the creative economy, we help strengthen communities and promote tourism that is both meaningful and impactful.
Let’s join forces in celebrating National Arts & Humanities Month. Attend a local event, advocate for funding, or create partnerships with cultural organizations – as we all have a role to play in ensuring that the arts and humanities continue to flourish.
